What fostering looks like, day to day
Fostering is short-term care for a dog who is waiting for a permanent home. You provide a calm place to land — a couch, a crate, regular meals, walks, and basic structure — while we handle the medical care, training support, and matching with adopters. Most stays are two to eight weeks but can vary depending on the dog. A typical day means walks two or three times or time out in the yard, regular meals, and quiet time to decompress. We just ask for open communication, a few photos and updates, and a heads-up if something isn't working so we can help.

Time commitment
Fosters typically have a dog for two to eight weeks, though some stays are shorter and some longer. We work around your schedule — short trips, holidays, work hours. If life changes, we'll find coverage.

A typical day
Walks a couple times a day or time out in the yard, regular meals, a quiet place to rest, and time to decompress. Most foster dogs need calm and routine more than anything else. We don't expect you to be a trainer — just a patient host.

What we ask of you
Open communication. Photos and short updates so we can match the dog with the right adopter. Letting us know early if something isn't working, so we can help or transfer the dog to another foster if needed.
You bring the home. We handle the rest.
There's no cost to fostering. Unleashed Potential covers everything the dog needs — financially and logistically — so the only thing you provide is space and time.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long will I have a foster dog?
Most foster stays last between two and eight weeks, though it varies. Some dogs are matched with adopters quickly; others need more time to decompress, train, or recover medically. We're transparent about expected timelines and you can opt for short-term or long-term fostering based on what fits your life.
Can I foster if I have other pets?
Yes — many of our best fosters have resident dogs or cats. We carefully match foster dogs to homes based on what we know about their behavior with other animals. We always recommend a slow, structured introduction, and we'll walk you through it.
Can I foster with kids in the house?
Yes. Plenty of our fosters are families. We'll match you with a dog whose temperament fits your household, and we never place a dog with unknown behavior history in a home with young children.
Do I need a fenced yard?
No. A fenced yard is helpful for some dogs but isn't required. Apartments, townhomes, and homes without yards all make great foster environments — daily walks and indoor space are what matter most.
What if my foster dog isn't a good fit for my home?
Tell us right away. Fostering is a partnership — if something isn't working, we'll either help you problem-solve or move the dog to another foster home. There's no penalty and no awkwardness. The goal is the right home for the dog and the right experience for you.
Can I adopt my foster dog?
Yes — it's called a 'foster fail' and it's one of our favorite outcomes. If you fall in love and want to make it permanent, just let your foster coordinator know. You'll go through the standard adoption process, and your foster experience counts as a head start.
What if there's a vet emergency?
Call your foster coordinator immediately. We have partner vets and a 24/7 process for handling emergencies. All veterinary costs are covered by Unleashed Potential — never the foster.
Will I get help with training or behavior issues?
Yes. We work with experienced trainers, that can help with crate training, leash manners, house training, and common behavioral hiccups. . You're never on your own — we want you to feel supported.
Do I need experience?
No experience needed! We provide full training and support. All you need is a willingness to open your home and heart to a dog in need.
What if I travel?
Short trips are no problem! We ask that fosters let us know ahead of time for backup coverage. We have temporary fosters and can board the dog if necessary
What supplies do you provide?
We provide everything your foster dog needs: food, crate, leash, collar, and all veterinary care. You just provide the love
Ready To Open Your Home?
Every foster home means one more dog out of the shelter and one step closer to a permanent home. We can't do this without you.
